Welcome to al-Zine

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,

al-Zine would like to welcome you to our humble blog al-Zine designed to focus on Zine making and the  people behind the art-form. We propose to do this by showcasing our collection of Zines produced via our workshops or through our network of creatives, and by sharing images, concepts, insight and processes behind zine creation.

The collective al-Zine is composed of three individuals:

Fran
Anna
And Leon D

A Zine (pronounced Zee-n), for those of you confused by its meaning, is a small handmade or DIY paper publication.  They are text and image based and usually have something important or interesting to say to their varying audiences.  Because of their in-expensive production and printing process- cut and paste compiled and photocopier printed- and their relatively small page number, zines are easily circulated. More recently they are recognized as unique collectors items representative of divergent contemporary thought.  Try to think of small (usually A5) self published and independent magazines, comics or opinion pieces before the days of social media when you think of a zine!

Soon there will be a workshop in association with the Ministry of Culture in Bahrain and the greater initiatives of the Manama Capital of Arab Culture, 2012 that will see participant's own zines published physically for a Bahraini audience and online for the web community.

The al-Zine workshop will take place in July for a duration of 4 classes

1st Day -Wed July 18th- 4:30 pm -6:30 pm
2nd day- Sat July 21st- 9:00 pm- 10:30 pm*
3rd day- Wed July 25th- 9:00 pm- 10:30 pm*
4th day- Sat July 28th- 9:00 pm- 10:30 pm*
*Ramadan timings

Please contact zine@moc.gov.bh to sign up! (They will need your name, age and phone number)

Location :

Bahrain National Museum
Through the workshop the attendants will be able to learn the theory behind the zine and implement their ideas in order to publish copies that will be distributed in the fall to various venues and events.
